This one is from Chanelle, a year ago. The postprocessing was hard to choose on this one; making the hair with more contrast, or giving it a softer look; I liked both.

The end result is a mix between Nik’s Silver Efex Pro and Nik’s Analog Efex (adding a slight defocus) somewhat. When viewed as a smaller image, it looks a bit like a pencil drawing more than a photo really, but I like it just the same. I don’t mind photos that are a little off the beaten path.

This is a picture from a year ago, September 2015, with Chanelle. There are still pictures there that are worth publishing, I think.

Also a photo of a shoot some time ago, this time postprocessed using Nik’s free effects filters (for Lightroom & Photoshop, amongst others). Thanks to Chanelle for posing.

I recently tried a bit of the double-exposure effect. This works quite effectively when using two silhouette type images. I wanted to start out with this photo though:

That took a bit of photoshopping to invert. Then I took a smartphone shot I took while running of a tree near my home and put that on top. The basic idea is to have a regular background image (the head in this case) and overlay the other silhouette image above that and change the layer blending mode to ‘Screen’.

In practice, I used quite a bit of masking to get the effect constrained to the areas I wanted to. This is what I ended up with:

Thanks to Chanelle for posing in the original image!

A nice one from Chanelle. I’m almost always a fan of black & white images, this one is no exception.

What is the magic of black & white and high contrast? The lack of color takes away part of the usual distractions to see form, something which you learn when you start drawing. In drawing, you really have to see the shadows (rather than see the light) and how it creates form. Recognize that and your drawings will be more real.

As for high contrast, perhaps it makes up for the lack of contrast that most screens have, compared to the large dynamic range that your eyes see when you look out into the real world.

This one was shot with a single light, in front of a light gray background, with a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens.

Another one from Chanelle. Only one light in front of a light gray background. It doesn’t need more than that really.

Another one from Chanelle, looking almost straight into a beauty dish, giving a somewhat theatrical look, like a ballerina about to go onstage.
