I recently tried a bit of the double-exposure effect. This works quite effectively when using two silhouette type images. I wanted to start out with this photo though:
That took a bit of photoshopping to invert. Then I took a smartphone shot I took while running of a tree near my home and put that on top. The basic idea is to have a regular background image (the head in this case) and overlay the other silhouette image above that and change the layer blending mode to ‘Screen’.
In practice, I used quite a bit of masking to get the effect constrained to the areas I wanted to. This is what I ended up with:
Thanks to Chanelle for posing in the original image!

This one from Kelly was originally a lot harsher in contrast. I took 3 different variations in Lightroom, exporting each to Photoshop and making a mix of the three for the jacket, Kelly’s head and her chest. This way the light balance was a lot softer, and I liked that look better in this case, instead of having a really high-contrast look (do note that it still has a lot of contrast).
The wind machine gave some life to her hair, the slanted look also adds some dynamics.

This is Deirdre, lying on what appears to be a wooden floor perhaps, but in reality this was one of Savage’s Floor Drops, named ‘Worn Planks Floor’. This carpet-like printed floor looks a little fake in real life, but in pictures it’s quite good. The only downside might be that you’d miss a bit of directional specular lighting at the edges, but if you have no idea what I’m talking about, then good! 😉
This was also the first time that I took out a ladder and climbed up high to get that high vantage point. It does help, although it looks a bit unsafe perhaps from the model’s side. The higher point also helped to prevent me using a lower focal length, since higher focal lengths like 85 or more are more pleasing to the eye.
Things went ok, no limbs were broken and this image is the result.
