What is the magic of black & white and high contrast? The lack of color takes away part of the usual distractions to see form, something which you learn when you start drawing. In drawing, you really have to see the shadows (rather than see the light) and how it creates form. Recognize that and your drawings will be more real.
As for high contrast, perhaps it makes up for the lack of contrast that most screens have, compared to the large dynamic range that your eyes see when you look out into the real world.
This one was shot with a single light, in front of a light gray background, with a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens.

Here are two things that I don’t do often – using natural light and a home scene.
The light was not particulary bright anymore – thanks to Canon 6D’s excellent ISO properties which still catches enough light. The lens was Canon’s 50/1.4.
The photo was taken in her bedroom and hardly postprocessed except for the obvious black & white conversion. It fits the girl’s character, it was much fun to try this as a change to the controlled studio environment!

Here is another one from the shoot with Annemiek at dusk. There was a Jinbei Discovery 1200Ws about 5 meters to her right, as you might notice from the hard shadows. The 1200Ws was not at full power though, that would be way too much.
Not too long after that we were asked to leave, since we were a bit too far from the walking path. 🙂
